Daniel Goodrich is an award-winning photojournalist, freelance photographer and educator. He is currently employeed as the Official Photographer for the Town of Islip on Long Island. Goodrich also produces photography for governmental, public relations, commercial, educational and political clients.
Goodrich’s 29-year career as a staff photographer for the Long Island, NY daily newspaper Newsday, encompassed some of the major news stories of the era; and resulted in a Pulitzer Prize—which Goodrich shared as part of Newsday’s team that covered the crash of TWA Flight 800 on Long Island in 1997—a Pulitzer finalist for coverage of the summer blackout that struck the Northeast in 2003, for coverage of the crash of Avianca Flight 92 in 1991; as well as two individual Pulitzer nominations for feature photography.
After leaving Newsday in 2009, Goodrich was the staff photographer for New York State Senator Kemp Hannon, who represented Long Island’s 6th District.
One of Goodrich’s individual Pulitzer nominations was for his 1988 coverage of the Papal visit by John Paul II to the United States. During John Paul’s inaugural U.S. visit, Goodrich was the only photojournalist among 20,000 accredited journalists who was invited to travel with and photograph for publication, the Pope during his private moments. In 1998, he was one of only two American photojournalists invited to Rome to join the Vatican press pool documenting the second papal visit to the U.S.
Other notable Goodrich assignments range from the year he spent following DEA agents investigating drug trafficking from poor neighborhoods in Brooklyn to the poppy fields of Peru—to the months he spent at Jones Beach, chronicling a summer in the life of the popular and historic seaside state park. His feature photography at Jones Beach was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize.
Goodrich has taught photography and photojournalism at Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism, Nassau County Community College, New York Institute of Technology, St. John’s University and Stony Brook University.
Goodrich served in the New York Army National Guard as a sergeant. He holds a Master's degree in Journalism from Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism and graduated from Boston University with a degree in Public Relations.
